COMMON ATLANTIC OYSTER (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin))

Oysters are bivalves that attach themselves to rocks, dock pilings or other hard surfaces. Using its gills it pulls in an average of 3-½ gallons of water per hour absorbing oxygen and trapping plankton for food.

It’s shell is grayish white and on the heavy side. Visually elongated and irregular in shape. A purple margin and a purple muscle scar may be found on the inside. It can reach 10" in length.

Oysters are an excellent source of minerals. Primarily zinc, which stimulates our immune system and is indispensable for the production and synthesis of the male hormone testosterone . . . therefore gaining it’s reputation as an aphrodisiac. New works -->

Bonnie Cameron, Artist Profile

Artist, Bonnie CameronFor more than three decades Bonnie’s artistic talents were focused in the commercial rather than fine art worlds.

During the past several years she was free-lancing in graphic design and creating art glass in her home studio.

Then in February of 2008 she picked up a pen and began to draw. In no time at all she decided to leave her glass studio behind to pursue her love of pen and ink that had fallen by the wayside on life’s journey. She said it felt as if she has come full circle and this is what she was meant to be doing.

After not drawing with pen and ink or exhibiting for many years Bonnie entered her first juried show and was recognized. She has received numerous awards in recent months including “Best in Show” this spring at the St. Augustine Art Association.

She was selected as a “featured artist” on Amelia Island for a two-month exhibit at the Island Art Association.

Her love of nature is evident in her work which presently focuses on trees and shells. Her technique stands alone. Her unique use of symbolism provokes her audience to go beyond the mere visual experience.

Bonnie has also been zooming in on trees and shells as she embarks on a new found love of macro photography.

The best is yet to be as her collection grows in this new chapter in her life.
